MASS SERIALIZATION - Background

Mass serialization involves assigning a code to each individual item that you wish to protect. This could be at item level, or case level or pallet level - or all three. Such codes must be unique and impossible to guess.
In their Feb 2004 report on combating counterfeit drugs, the FDA concluded that mass serialization is “the single most powerful tool available to secure the U. S. drug supply”.

WHY IS MASS SERIALIZATION A STRONG SOLUTION?
Counterfeiters try to copy or emulate security features, making it hard for the user to spot fakes. With Mass Serialization, each genuine product has it’s own unique code: like a fingerprint.

Checking does not require extensive training or expensive readers - just access to the web, and for high volumes of codes a cheap barcode wand or scanner.

Genuine codes are created and stored securely, so the counterfeiters cannot access them for use on fakes - at best they could get a genuine product and “clone” the number, but the system will detect this as such codes will be entered many more times than normal.

The serialization code provides the building block for a full electronic “pedigree” system, recording the origin and movement of the genuine product.
